Cookie jars that can come in a variety of styles, such as utilitarian jars or décor items made of ceramics or glass, can be often seen in the kitchens of many homes in the U.S. and Canada. In the UK they are known as "biscuit barrel" or biscuit jars. If they look like tin cans they are called "biscuits". Cookie jars are used for storing cookies, however sometimes they can be used for storing other food products, such as candy or dog treats, as well as some other edible items. They can also be used as a piggy bank.

The Brush Pottery Company of Zanesville, based in Ohio, is known as the maker of the first ceramic cookie jar. Originally, the jar was made of green glass and had a convex writing «Cookies» in the front. Ceramic cookie jars of various shapes, adorned with some décor or shaped like other things or popular characters appeared in the late 1930-s. These days cookie jars may have an exotic and not always appealing look. The peak of popularity of such weird cookie jars was from 1940 until 1970.
